Swansea Road Show

The Never Forget Your Welsh Heroes team had a very successful and enjoyable day at Swansea Museum on 1st June 2016. We arrived at 9.45. While Ann and Roger struggled with the displays, Pam struggled with the coffee machine and was rescued by a kind member of staff. We were able to show visitors extracts from some of the diaries and letters which are now available on the website. One young girl sat on the floor and read aloud the diary of Lieutenant Ernest Kirkland Laman to her sisters. Equally fascinating to the youngsters was the film made by the pupils of Gwernyfed school after their visit to The Royal Welsh Regimental Museum in Brecon. The film shows the pupils re-enacting soldiers writing home from the trenches in World War One. The highlight of the day for most young visitors to the Roadshow was a postcard of the late lamented Taffy, the Regimental Goat. Whilst the youngsters were kept interested, the team exchanged information with the adult visitors who included visitors from America and Australia. We explained the purpose of the Never Forget Your Welsh Heroes project. The response was very positive and encouraging with promises to spread the word and seek out any diaries or letters tucked away in lofts and cupboards.

We welcomed Mrs Jean Davies as our eager first visitor who brought us some photographs and a diary of her father, William John Thomas (Bill), from World War Two. Bill took his accordion to war with him and they both survived. Look out for Bill on our website in July. We also had a long chat with Mr Jeffrey Lewis who brought us a copy of his book, the results of his investigations into local soldiers. Mr Lewis started his research as part of a course with Swansea College and has carried on this work ever since, publishing his book - a copy of which can be found in Swansea Museum library. We learnt so much at Swansea and look forward to our next Roadshow.

A big thank you to Emma Williams, Paul Giuffrida and all the staff for their help and warm welcome. Join us at our next Roadshow in Cardiff in September. More details to follow on our events page shortly.
